What is Patch Check?

Microsoft periodically releases Hotfixes and Security Updates to improve their Operating Systems.

  • On a home computer, these patches are installed either (a) automatically, if auto update is enabled, or (b) manually, when running Windows Update.
  • On an office computer, these patches are usually installed over an internal network by the local IT Department.
  • On a medical computer, an entirely different process is needed. All medical software must be validated and approved; and just as importantly, should never be modified except by the Original Equipment Manufacturer.

For Siemens MI-SPECT systems, whenever Microsoft releases a Hotfix or a Security Update, Siemens software engineers perform extensive testing to determine whether each patch has any adverse effect on its existing medical software. The patch will only be “approved” once that process is complete.

So how can someone tell if their Siemens MI-SPECT system is up to date with Microsoft Hotfixes and Security Updates?   In my personal option, the answer is running a patch_check script.  Be advised that a patch_check script does not install anything or make any changes to the system whatsoever.  Instead, it reads the list of Engineering Fixes installed within the Operating System, and then compares it to a known list of approved patches.  It's quick and its painless.
